Modified gravity and inertia: Mach’s principle, MOND, origin of inertia, gravitational constant

The lack of a phenomenological explanation of Modified Newtonian Dynamics and its falling short in galaxy clusters suggest that MOND is an approximation of a more fundamental theory of modified gravity or inertia. There are strong indications that point towards a Machian origin of MOND, providing an explanation for the apparent dark matter effects in galaxies. The origin of inertia and a derivation of the gravitational constant are also related to these problems in gravitation.

Dark energy and the cosmological constant: Energy conservation and gravitational potential energy

Dark energy can be explained through an equivalent energy density of spacetime. This energy density, apparently created ‘from nothing’, may have an origin in the redshift of all forms of energy in the cosmos, by imposing cosmological energy conservation in General Relativity, or by considering the effects of negative gravitational potential energy. If kinetic energy manifesting inertia is due to gravitation à la Mach, the total energy of the universe should be zero.

Regular black hole interior solutions in classical gravity violating Penrose’s energy conditions

General Relativity and Penrose’s singularity theorems directly point towards the solution to gravitational singularities at back hole interiors in a classical way through negative masses violating energy conditions. This implies a mechanism to switch from positive to negative masses and energies at the event horizon, which is thought to be a time transformation. The solution to geodesic incompleteness in black holes is an open problem which could hint a more complete theory of gravity and explain the nature of time.
